Helsinki-Vantaa Airport Radically Boosts Vehicle Throughput with Moovy

When Finland's busiest airport, Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, needed a smarter way to manage its drop-off traffic, Vuono Group and Moovy delivered a future-proof parking solution through modern business engineering.

The Challenge

The airport operator, Finavia, wanted to ensure a smooth flow of drop-off traffic during peak hours. Short-term parking had to be free by default, but enable a seamless switch to paid parking for cars that stayed longer. The solution needed to be fast, scalable, and reliable while also integrating tightly with physical infrastructure like cameras, displays, and gate systems.

Business Engineering in Action

Working with Vuono Group, Moovy reimagined the digital parking architecture with an automation-first mindset. Instead of building a monolithic software solution, we broke the process into modular, event-driven workflows that could be developed, tested, and scaled independently.

Key technologies and approaches:

  • Event-driven CQRS architecture using Kurrent for durable, replayable events, serving as a source of truth for read projections.

  • Camunda is used to orchestrate business logic and decision-making across the workflow.

  • Frends as an API Gateway for external system integrations.

  • AWS-managed services (e.g. DynamoDB, IoT, serverless compute) for scalability, reliability, and hands-free operations.

  • Azure Entra ID for secure, managed authentication.

  • MQTT protocol for real-time communication with physical devices (e.g. ANPR cameras, info screens, gate systems).

  • AI-assisted microservice generation for fast delivery of simple, isolated system components.

From Idea to Live System in Record Time

Thanks to process automation and modern cloud-native tools, the end-to-end delivery from process modelling to production was completed in record time. With process digital twins, business stakeholders could visually validate and simulate the process (e.g., camera triggers → vehicle status check → info screen control) before development even started. This drastically reduced delivery drift and made sure the result matched the intent.

The Business Impact

  • Faster throughput for travellers. With real-time license plate recognition and automated decisioning, cars move through the drop-off zone efficiently.

  • No unnecessary queues. Travellers are informed through dynamic info screens and only pay if their stay exceeds the free limit.

  • Seamless operations. Moovy can now run one of Finland’s busiest parking zones without human intervention or physical gates.

  • Sustainable scalability. Serverless architecture and managed services reduce operational overhead and support dynamic scaling during peak hours.

  • Process-first architecture. All business logic lives in transparent, traceable workflows that enable continuous improvement and vertical slicing for future needs.

This case shows what’s possible when business engineering meets modern digital architecture. By combining process-first thinking, cloud-native tools, and AI-assisted development, Vuono Group helped us deliver a parking solution that not only solves today’s challenge but is built to evolve with tomorrow’s needs.
